Shock for US President: Venezuelan MP Wins Nobel Peace Prize

In a major surprise, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, leaving US President Donald Trump deeply disappointed. Trump, who had long aspired to win the Nobel Peace Prize, had often claimed he was more deserving than anyone else, arguing that he “ended seven wars” and that denying him the award would be an “insult to America.”

However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee chose to honor María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan parliament member known for her relentless fight for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. Despite Trump’s lobbying and multiple nominations — reportedly supported by Russia, Pakistan, and Canada — he failed to secure the coveted honor.

This year, 338 nominations were received for the Peace Prize — including 244 individuals and 94 organizations — but the committee decided in favor of Machado, citing her “unwavering, peaceful struggle for democratic reform.”

Machado has been a key figure in Venezuela’s opposition, fighting against military rule and for the restoration of civil rights. Since 2024, she has lived in hiding due to threats to her life but continues to inspire millions from within the country. Her commitment to peaceful resistance, despite intimidation and persecution, earned her global recognition.

The Nobel Committee stated that Machado was chosen for “her leadership in uniting Venezuelans against authoritarianism and her steadfast commitment to non-violence.” Even in the face of repression, she refused to endorse any form of violence, remaining a symbol of peaceful democratic resistance.

Born on October 7, 1967, Machado entered politics in 2002. She currently serves as the National Coordinator of the opposition party Vente Venezuela. Over the years, she has featured in the BBC’s 100 Women list (2018) and TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. The Venezuelan government has even barred her from leaving the country due to her activism.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be officially presented on December 10 in Oslo, Norway, with the laureate receiving a gold medal, a diploma, and 11 million Swedish Kronor (about $1.2 million) in prize money, funded by the Nobel Foundation.

Trump’s long-held ambition for the Peace Prize, despite his self-proclaimed achievements, has once again ended in disappointment — while the honor goes to a woman who risked her life to bring democracy and peace to her country.
