Tensions Escalate in Iran as Israel Targets Khamenei

The ongoing fierce conflict between Israel and Iran has created a highly tense atmosphere. Both nations are carrying out reciprocal strikes, mainly targeting military bases. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that "this is just the beginning," hinting at a prolonged campaign. On the other hand, Iran has intensified its attacks on Israel, launching a series of drone strikes. So far, 78 Iranian civilians have been reported dead, with 329 injured. In Israel, one person has died and 39 have been injured.

Israel is now directly targeting Iran’s top leadership. Reports indicate that airstrikes occurred near the residence of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Videos of these strikes, reportedly in Monirieh district of Tehran—where Khamenei's residence and the Iranian presidential office are located—have gone viral on social media. Local media have also released footage related to the attack.

Meanwhile, Khamenei announced the appointment of Amir Hatami as the new Chief of the Iranian Military. This follows the reported death of Iran's previous military chief, Mohammad Bagheri, in the Israeli airstrikes. Hatami previously served as Iran’s Defense Minister from 2013 to 2023.

Under the name "Operation Rising Lion," Israel has launched large-scale attacks on Iran, striking nuclear and military installations as well as targeting top military officials. Iran has lost several key military commanders and nuclear scientists in these attacks, particularly in Tehran. Iran has responded with its own counter-strikes.

As the war escalates, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for restraint. In a post on Twitter, he urged both countries to de-escalate tensions and pursue peace through diplomacy, emphasizing, “The time to stop the attacks is now.”
