US President Donald Trump has once again mixed praise with a warning while speaking about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While calling Modi a “very good person,” Trump cautioned that tariffs would be increased if India does not act in line with US expectations.
Speaking during remarks on possible action against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Trump also referred to India. He claimed that India had reduced its purchases of Russian oil to please him.
“They wanted to make me happy. Prime Minister Modi is a very good person. He knows that I’m not happy. Making me happy is very important. If they continue doing business with Russia, we will raise tariffs very quickly,” Trump warned. An audio clip of these remarks was shared on the White House’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Commenting on global economic conditions, Trump said Russia’s economy was not doing well and described Venezuela’s economic situation as even worse. He claimed that Venezuela had the worst economy he had ever seen.
Trump’s remarks have gained attention as trade talks between India and the United States are currently underway. It may be recalled that earlier too, Trump had stated that Prime Minister Modi assured him India would reduce Russian oil purchases.
