The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) today announced that it had launched airstrikes on six major airbases across Iran. According to a statement released on IDF’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the operation targeted airfields in western, eastern, and central Iran, aiming to disable Iran’s aerial capabilities.
The IDF said it used remote aircraft (likely drones) in the operation, resulting in the destruction of approximately 15 Iranian aircraft, including fighter jets and helicopters. Among the damaged assets were F-14s, F-5s, AH-1 helicopters, a refueling aircraft, and runways, underground bunkers, and hangars at the targeted locations.
Key airbases hit during the operation include Mehrabad, Mashhad, and Dezful, with the attacks designed to prevent take-offs and further military action from those sites. The IDF also claimed it had targeted Iranian army installations with precision strikes.
According to the IDF, around 20 Israeli warplanes were involved in the coordinated operation, which was based on real-time intelligence. Strikes were also carried out near Kermanshah, Hamedan, and Tehran, using approximately 30 bombs.
In addition to aircraft and infrastructure, the IDF claimed it had destroyed missile storage units, launch facilities, radar and satellite systems, and surface-to-air missile (SAM) launch sites. The objective, according to Israel, was to cripple Iran’s military strength and prevent further air attacks on Israeli civilians.
The Iranian government has not yet issued an official statement in response to the attack. Tensions remain high in the region following escalating hostilities linked to Operation Sindoor and broader Middle East dynamics.
