Elon Musk is bringing Grokipedia as an alternative to Wikipedia. He hinted at this last month and recently made a clearer announcement, saying Grokipedia will be public in about two weeks.
If true, this is good news for many people. Right now, hundreds of millions rely on Wikipedia. Grokipedia is being presented as an alternative — and Musk has implied it will be free, similar to Wikipedia.
But how reliable will Grokipedia be? There are already many doubts about Wikipedia’s trustworthiness; you can’t accept everything you read there at face value. Musk’s whole crusade to provide an alternative stems from controversies around Wikipedia.
Conservatives in the U.S. have long argued that Wikipedia doesn’t represent traditional views. Some Americans — particularly Republicans — claim Wikipedia has been taken over by left-leaning editors. Musk has acknowledged some of these criticisms.
After blasting Wikipedia for a while, Musk is now rolling out Grokipedia as an alternative. It will operate via Grok. Musk says Grokipedia will be able to determine what information is true, partially true, false, or incomplete.
That sounds promising so far, but many doubts remain about Grokipedia. Those doubts stem largely from Musk’s past promotional efforts through X and Grok. People remember how X’s AI content and Musk’s control of Twitter/X led to pro-Trump amplification and controversies.
So there’s a question: will Grok and Grokipedia tell the truth across all topics? People also wonder whether Grokipedia will allow easy edits and corrections the way Wikipedia does — will that openness be preserved?
Some people simply don’t trust Musk. He handled Twitter/X the way he wanted, then introduced subscription fees. Skeptics say Grokipedia could follow the same path: even though it’s being touted as open-source or free now, once Wikipedia’s influence wanes and users switch to Grokipedia, Musk might start charging fees.
Putting subscription worries aside, the main interest for everyone is how Grokipedia will handle factual accuracy. Because Grok is perceived as less aligned with Trump, some people feel more comfortable trusting a Musk-backed Grokipedia — but many remain cautious.
