“I am the lover of world peace; I have established peace in the world. I stopped wars. I am protecting the world. Who could desire peace more than me?”
These are some of the things U.S. President Donald Trump has said on various occasions. A president who lavishes such self-praise may be unique in American history — perhaps Trump is the only one. But why all this boasting?
The answer is simple: his eye is on the Nobel Peace Prize. He is determined to secure the Nobel Peace Prize this year by any means possible. A few countries have even nominated Trump. So, can what he desires actually happen?
Whether Trump will receive the Peace Prize or not will be decided in a few days. The Nobel Peace Prize winner is scheduled to be announced in Oslo on October 10.
If Trump wins, fine. If not, it’s not even clear whether he was in the running — because the Nobel Committee’s rules are strict. To find out whether a person was nominated or considered for the Peace Prize, you must wait 50 years.
The Committee’s rules are such that whether Trump was nominated this year — or whether his name was even examined — will only become public five decades later. For example, because we are now in 2025, the names of those nominated in 1975 will be officially released this year.
No one can influence the Nobel Committee — not even the U.S. President. So in this matter, there’s nothing Trump can do. We only have to wait four more days.
