A BBC documentary titled "The Killing Call"—based on the assassination of popular Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala—has sparked controversy and legal action. Released on YouTube in two parts on June 11, coinciding with Moosewala’s 32nd birth anniversary, the documentary has drawn strong objections from his father, Balkaur Singh.
Balkaur Singh has approached the Mansa court seeking the immediate removal of the videos from YouTube and a halt to further streaming. In his complaint, he alleged that the documentary contains objectionable content, which not only interferes with the ongoing legal investigation but also invades the privacy of his family.
During the initial hearing, the BBC and other respondents requested additional time to file their written responses. The Mansa court adjourned the matter to June 16, directing all parties to submit their replies and any responses related to the stay application by that date.
Sidhu Moosewala was brutally murdered on May 29, 2022, in Mansa district while on his way to his native village. Armed assailants intercepted his vehicle and gunned him down, in a killing that shocked the nation. Canadian-based gangster Goldy Brar is considered the prime suspect in the murder case. The BBC documentary reportedly includes an audio interview with Goldy Brar, adding to the controversy.
Originally, the BBC had planned to premiere the documentary publicly in Mumbai, but due to legal challenges and anticipated backlash, the producers opted for a YouTube release instead.
