The NDA has officially announced its Vice-Presidential candidate — none other than the current Governor of Maharashtra, C.P. Radhakrishnan, who hails from Tamil Nadu. Political observers believe this move by the NDA, particularly the BJP, is aimed at strengthening its foothold in the South, especially in Tamil Nadu.
However, the INDIA bloc is determined to counter this strategy with equal force. To checkmate the NDA’s regional equation, the alliance has decided to field a strong candidate from Tamil Nadu itself — senior DMK leader and Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva.
Who is Tiruchi Siva?
Tiruchi Siva is a seasoned politician from the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu. By nominating him, the INDIA bloc hopes not only to block NDA’s plans for a consensus candidate but also to ensure that southern representation tilts in their favor.
A Rare Contest Between Two Tamils
Observers note that this would be a rare scenario where both Vice-Presidential contenders hail from the same state — Tamil Nadu. If Tiruchi Siva is confirmed as INDIA’s candidate, the contest will effectively become a battle between two Tamils. This is seen as a direct challenge to the BJP’s southern strategy.
The South Becomes Key
If this face-off materializes, the Vice-Presidential election could become crucial for South Indian politics. INDIA bloc already has strongholds in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana. In Andhra Pradesh, the YSRCP is neutral, while the BRS in Telangana is also expected to stay neutral. By fielding a southern candidate, INDIA hopes not only to block NDA from gaining momentum in the region but also to potentially attract new allies.
“A Tamil Candidate Doesn’t Mean Tamil Interests”
Reacting to NDA’s move, DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said: “Just because a Tamil is nominated for the Vice President’s post, it doesn’t automatically translate into a gain for Tamil Nadu. We see Radhakrishnan not as a Tamil representative, but as the BJP’s candidate.”
On the other hand, the INDIA bloc believes that bringing Tiruchi Siva into the race will strike a strong blow against BJP’s attempts to expand its influence in the South.
High-Stakes Contest Ahead
All in all, the upcoming Vice-Presidential election is expected to be not only fierce but also politically significant. With two Tamils in the fray, the battle could redefine southern equations in national politics.
