Modi’s Strong Counter to Trump’s Tariffs

Amid the crisis triggered by U.S. tariffs, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded firmly, making a key statement with a focus on the welfare of farmers and fishermen. "The interests of our farmers are our top priority," Modi asserted. He made it clear that India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of its farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen. "I know I may have to pay a heavy personal price for this, but I am ready," he stated.

Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference held at ICAR Pusa in Delhi, the Prime Minister reiterated that the Indian government stands firmly with its farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers. He emphasized that the government is constantly working toward increasing farmers’ income, reducing agricultural expenses, and creating new sources of revenue. The NDA government sees the strength of farmers as the foundation of national progress, he added.

Modi also mentioned the recent approval of the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Yojana, under which 100 backward agricultural districts have been selected for development. By improving infrastructure and offering financial support in these areas, a new confidence is being instilled in agriculture. The establishment of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) has strengthened the collective power of small farmers.

Additionally, financial aid to cooperative and self-help groups has given a boost to the rural economy. Thanks to the e-NAM platform, farmers now find it easier to sell their produce, Modi noted.
