In the ongoing hearing on the Karur stampede tragedy, the Madras High Court expressed strong displeasure against Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay. The court sternly warned that judicial forums should not be turned into political platforms, a remark that has now become a major talking point.
The Karur tragedy, which claimed more than 40 lives and left dozens injured, has sparked nationwide debate. Alleging that the incident was part of a conspiracy by the Stalin government, TVK filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking a CBI probe. The petitions also demanded enhanced compensation, anticipatory bail for TVK leaders, and other reliefs. The Madurai Bench of the High Court heard seven such petitions today.
During the hearing, the court came down heavily on the petitioners, questioning how they could demand a CBI probe at the preliminary stage of the state’s investigation. The judges advised TVK’s lawyers to first wait for the outcome of the state inquiry and only then approach the court if dissatisfied.
The bench also criticized the organizers, asking why basic facilities like drinking water and food were not provided during the political meeting. “Please do not convert courts into political platforms,” the judges cautioned.
At the same time, the court pulled up the Tamil Nadu government as well. It questioned how permissions for rallies and public meetings were being granted. Specifically, the bench grilled the police on how permission was given for TVK’s roadside rally in Karur. Government lawyers sought time to provide explanations, and the court granted it.
