Iran Snubs Pakistan’s India Remarks

During his Tehran visit, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif raised India-related tensions in a meeting with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. However, Iran maintained a neutral stance, expressing hope for peaceful dialogue between India and Pakistan. Khamenei stated he was pleased by the cessation of hostilities and wished for a resolution.

Sharif called for talks with India on water, trade, and counter-terrorism, insisting Pakistan sincerely wants peace. Despite these statements, Iran did not endorse Pakistan’s position. Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s desire for regional peace and supported dialogue rather than taking sides.

The backdrop includes heightened India-Pakistan tensions after the April Pahalgam terror attack and India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor. Following a deadly exchange involving airstrikes and drone warfare, a ceasefire was initiated after Pakistani officials contacted India. Sharif's visit to Iran followed strained ties due to earlier Iranian airstrikes in Pakistan’s Balochistan, adding complexity to the regional dynamics.
