Power is like an intoxicating drug. Politicians are never eager to let it go, because without that intoxication they cannot handle politics. In our country, there is no rule that one can hold high offices only a fixed number of times. A leader can become Chief Minister as many times as possible, and even Prime Minister multiple times. KCR, for example, wanted to become CM for the third time.
But for various reasons, Revanth Reddy became CM. Now he is claiming that Congress will return to power in the next elections and that he will once again become CM. His sycophants are going even further, saying not only next time, but even beyond that, only Revanth Reddy will remain CM. When Jagan was CM in Andhra Pradesh, his loyalists too claimed he would continue as CM for another thirty years.
The same was the case when Chandrababu first became CM — his followers boasted that he would remain CM for thirty years. But reality turned out to be very different. After all, we live in a democracy. In such a system, no leader can continue to hold the same position for decades on end. But sycophants and blind devotees fail to understand that.
Among such blind devotees is none other than Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who is a staunch loyalist of Prime Minister Modi. Loyalty is fine, but in his case, it has crossed all limits. He recently declared, “There will be no vacancy for the post of Prime Minister in the near future. In 2029, 2034, 2039, and 2044 elections, Narendra Modi will remain our party’s prime ministerial candidate. Only after the centenary of India’s Independence in 2047 will he retire.”
Rajnath Singh further said that in the coming years too, it is Modi who will lead the BJP, leaving no room for doubt. In an interview to India Today TV, he displayed his unwavering devotion and loyalty toward Modi. That’s fine, but how can he be so certain that Modi will continue as PM for another four terms? How is he so sure that the BJP will keep winning all those elections?
If Modi retires only after the centenary celebrations in 2047, he would be nearly a hundred years old by then. Even if things go as Rajnath Singh imagines, is it really possible for someone past ninety to actively handle the responsibilities of Prime Minister? Would other leaders in the party quietly accept Modi’s continuous dominance?
Above all, Modi himself must have the desire to remain Prime Minister indefinitely, and the people of India must keep electing BJP every single time. Will there really be no political change in the country until 2044? Will Modi continue to function with the same energy and strength for the next two decades?
Unless Rajnath Singh can logically answer such questions, his statements remain nothing more than blind devotion. Excessive loyalty of this kind is closer to monarchy than democracy.
