COVID-19 in India Cross 5,000 Mark, Death Toll Rises to 55

COVID-19 seems to be making a worrying comeback in India. After remaining relatively silent for most of last year, the virus is once again spreading rapidly. Globally, infections are rising, and India is no exception, with the virus now spreading quietly under the radar.

In the last 24 hours alone, 498 new COVID-19 cases have been reported, pushing the total number of infections in the country this year to over 5,000. According to the latest data from the Union Ministry of Health, between 8 AM Wednesday and 8 AM Thursday, 498 fresh cases were recorded, taking the cumulative tally for 2025 to 5,364.

Kerala reported the highest number of cases at 1,679, followed by Gujarat (615), West Bengal (596), Delhi (592), Maharashtra (548), and Karnataka (451).

The death toll also saw a rise, with four COVID-related deaths reported in the last 24 hours — two in Kerala and one each in Karnataka and Punjab. With this, the total number of COVID deaths in India this year has climbed to 55.

Meanwhile, 4,724 people have recovered and been discharged so far in 2025, according to official figures.
