A sitting MLA has been arrested in a sexual assault (rape) case in Kerala. The arrest of Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil on Friday has become a major topic of discussion. Rahul, who represents the Congress party, is facing serious allegations of sexual harassment.
Earlier, a film actress and another young woman had accused the MLA of sexually harassing them, leading to cases being registered against him. Rahul Mamkootathil had approached the court and secured bail in both those cases.
In the latest development, another woman has come forward with fresh allegations. She accused the MLA of impregnating her and later threatening her to terminate the pregnancy. She claimed that he deceived her, gained her trust, and later avoided her when she asked him to marry her. The woman also stated that she had remained silent for a long time due to his political influence and stature.
With multiple victims coming forward and filing complaints against the MLA, the latest complainant said she finally gathered the courage to approach the police. Following these allegations, Rahul Mamkootathil went missing for a brief period.
Police eventually traced him to a hotel in Palakkad, where he was arrested. The arrest has drawn widespread attention across the state.
Rahul Mamkootathil rose to prominence through student movements and was elected as an MLA for the first time. However, a series of sexual assault allegations has severely tarnished his image. In response to the developments, the Congress party has already suspended him from the party.
