The Indian aviation sector has been facing a series of bomb threats over the past two weeks, with around 400 alerts, leading to severe reputational damage and significant financial losses estimated at over 1,000 crores. As emergency landings become more frequent, the public's trust in Indian airlines has taken a hit, with some passengers reconsidering their travel plans on these carriers.
In just one recent day, 62 bomb threats targeted Indian flights, with 21 affecting Air India, 21 Indigo, and 20 Vistara planes. Although most threats originate via emails traced to locations in London and Germany, authorities are struggling to address the issue effectively. Even though every single threat has so far been a hoax, each incident is treated with utmost caution to prevent any potential risk.
The impact extends beyond passengers to include ground staff and in-flight crews, who now work extended hours due to rigorous security checks and emergency protocols. Despite warnings of life imprisonment for those found disrupting aviation security, the emails continue unabated.
India's aviation sector has seen exponential growth, with over 150 million domestic passengers last year and over 3,000 daily flights from 150 airports. Analysts suggest that these threats are intended to damage the sector’s global reputation.
