Walking is one of the simplest and most beneficial forms of exercise — a fact supported by numerous studies. However, some so-called YouTube "experts" claim that walking offers no real benefits and can even lead to muscle loss. If we ignore such baseless claims, scientific research continues to emphasize the importance of walking.
Recently, researchers from the University of Oxford released findings highlighting the health benefits of regular walking. According to their study, people who walk 10,000 steps a day are significantly less likely to develop certain types of cancer.
The study, which tracked 85,000 individuals over six years, monitored their daily activity, walking patterns, and physical changes. The results are compelling: walking regularly can help prevent 13 different types of cancer, including liver, lung, kidney, gastric, endometrial, colon, head and neck, and bladder cancers.
Even walking as few as 5,000 steps a day can positively impact your body, according to the study. The more you walk, the greater the benefits. Walking is especially protective for people who spend most of their time sitting or working at desks, shielding them from the increased cancer risks associated with sedentary lifestyles.
Previous research has also suggested walking at least 6,000 steps a day as a health guideline. Doctors often recommend walking to address a wide range of health issues. Whether it’s gastric problems or body fat, walking proves to be one of the most effective solutions.
By making walking a daily habit and aiming for 6,000 to 10,000 steps per day, you can enjoy one of the most powerful and accessible forms of exercise — a conclusion supported by both recent and past research findings.
