Actor and TVK party chief Vijay has landed in serious trouble after a stampede broke out during one of his public meetings. Reports indicate that over 20 people have died so far, with fears that the death toll may rise further.
Vijay, who recently launched his political party, has been holding a series of rallies and public meetings. As part of this, a massive gathering was organized in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which drew thousands of people.
The venue was too small for the huge crowd. While Vijay was addressing the gathering, people suddenly surged forward, triggering a stampede. At one point, even the vehicle Vijay was standing on shook due to the push and chaos.
Realizing that the situation had spiraled out of control, Vijay immediately stopped his speech and requested the police to intervene. He himself threw water bottles into the crowd to help and urged people to make way for ambulances.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. However, several had already succumbed to injuries, while others died during treatment. The exact official death toll has not yet been released.
Just a week ago, Chief Minister Stalin had expressed concern over the chaos at Vijay’s rallies and even imposed certain restrictions. Vijay had openly questioned these curbs, asking why he was being prevented from meeting people. He repeatedly alleged that voting for DMK was equivalent to indirectly voting for the BJP.
Now, even before those political arguments could settle, a massive stampede at Vijay’s rally has claimed dozens of lives.
