Senior IPS Officer Commits Suicide in Haryana

Police officers are often seen as symbols of courage, strength, and determination. They are expected to face any challenge head-on — especially IPS officers, who hold high positions and are considered role models. But in real life, even senior officers sometimes struggle to cope with mental stress.

A tragic incident took place in Haryana where a senior IPS officer ended his life. Senior officer Puran Kumar shot himself dead with his service revolver at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, earlier today.

After receiving the information, police rushed to the spot. Forensic experts have started the investigation. The suicide of such a high-ranking officer has created a sensation across the state. The reason behind his extreme step, however, remains unknown.

Reports suggest that Puran Kumar had taken his service revolver from his gunman on Monday. He was currently serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) and was recently posted to the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Sunaria, Rohtak, on September 29.

His wife, Amneet P. Kumar, is an IAS officer of the Haryana cadre. At the time of the incident, she was not at home — she is currently on an official visit to Japan as part of a delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Puran Kumar, a 2001 batch IPS officer, was reportedly on leave, although police have not officially confirmed this. He lived in a three-storey building at Kothi No. 116, Sector 11, where each floor housed different families. His family lived on the ground floor.

The residents of the building had hired private security guards. It was these guards who informed the police about the gunshot. Interestingly, laborers working at a nearby construction site said they did not hear any gunfire. They only noticed police vehicles arriving around 2 p.m., which alerted them to the incident.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that there were ongoing disputes related to the promotion process among IPS officers of the 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005 batches. Several officers had reportedly written to the Chief Minister alleging irregularities and violations of service rules in the promotions.

It is unclear whether Puran Kumar took the drastic step due to this professional stress or for some other personal reason. The investigation is ongoing.
