KGF’s 'Bombay Don' Dinesh Mangalore passes away

Indian cinema has lost many great contributors over the years — B. Saroja Devi, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Dheeraj Kumar, Mukul Dev, Fish Venkat, and others who served the industry in their own way. Now, yet another shock has struck the Kannada film industry: Dinesh Mangalore, popularly known as the “Bombay Don” in KGF and a renowned art director, passed away today (August 25).

Originally from Mangalore, Dinesh had been unwell for some time and was receiving treatment at Surgeon Hospital in Koteshwara, Kundapur. During the making of Kantara, he reportedly suffered a stroke and was later shifted to Bengaluru for treatment. After recovering, he returned to Kundapur, but last week his health deteriorated again. He was admitted to the same hospital in Koteshwara, where despite treatment, he breathed his last this morning.

Coming from a theatre background, Dinesh initially aspired to be an actor, but his early opportunities came in art direction. He worked under renowned art director Shashidhar Adapa on films such as Chinnari Mutha before making his independent debut as an art director with T. S. Nagabharana’s Janumada Jodi.

He went on to work on several notable films, including Veera Madakari, Chandramukhi Pranasakhi, and No. 73 Shantinivasa. For his art direction in the film Rakshasa starring Shivarajkumar, he was honored with the Karnataka State Award for Best Art Director in 2004–05.
