In a significant ruling, the Calcutta High Court has directed Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs 4 lakh to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter. The court deemed the previously ordered amount by a Sessions Court as insufficient, considering Shami’s substantial income as a professional cricketer.
The revised order breaks down the payment into Rs 1.30 lakh per month for Hasin Jahan and Rs 50,000 per month for their daughter, totaling Rs 1.80 lakh. The court further ordered that an additional Rs 2.20 lakh be paid monthly towards their overall welfare and living expenses, taking the total to Rs 4 lakh.
Earlier, a Sessions Court had ordered Shami to pay Rs 50,000 to Hasin Jahan and Rs 80,000 to their daughter. However, Jahan had challenged this ruling, arguing that the sum was too low to maintain a standard of living in line with Shami’s financial status.
The High Court acknowledged her plea and emphasized that the earlier amount did not reflect the income and lifestyle of a cricketer of Shami’s stature. The bench observed that maintenance should ensure a life of dignity for both the wife and the child, not merely survival.
Mohammed Shami, a key member of India’s national cricket team, has been involved in a long-standing legal dispute with Hasin Jahan since their separation in 2018. This ruling marks a crucial development in the ongoing legal battle and sets a precedent for maintenance cases involving high-earning individuals.
