In a major blow to Indian cricket fans, Virat Kohli, one of India’s greatest batters, has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. He made the announcement through an emotional post on Instagram just a short while ago.
This comes only days after Rohit Sharma also bid farewell to Test cricket. With both senior players stepping down, India will face England in the upcoming Test series without Kohli and Rohit for the first time in over a decade. As of now, the duo is expected to continue only in ODI cricket, possibly till the 2027 ODI World Cup.
In his farewell message, Kohli wrote:
“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the Indian jersey in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined this format would take me this far. Test cricket tested me, shaped me, and taught me life lessons I’ll carry forever. Wearing the white jersey has always held a special place in my heart. The silent satisfaction, the long days, and those small, unseen moments will stay with me forever.”
He added:
“Walking away from this format wasn’t easy, but I feel it’s the right decision. I’ve given everything I had, and it gave me back more than I ever expected. I’m leaving with a heart full of gratitude and satisfaction. When I look back at my Test career, it brings a smile to my face. Signing off. 269.”
Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 and went on to play 123 Tests, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties. His contribution to Indian cricket, especially in red-ball format, is considered legendary.
