The position of head coach of the Indian cricket team has always been a hot topic. While Gautam Gambhir is currently serving in the role successfully, discussions have already begun about who might take over in the future. Among the most prominent names being mentioned is that of former captain Sourav Ganguly, the man credited with revolutionizing Indian cricket. This has sparked questions: Will Ganguly replace Gambhir before his tenure ends? Are mid-term changes possible?
Gautam Gambhir is currently leading the Indian team as head coach. Under his guidance, India has shown strong performances, though criticism has followed some crucial series defeats—particularly against Australia and New Zealand in Test cricket, as well as certain struggles on home soil. Still, India’s Champions Trophy triumph under his coaching remains a big achievement. His direct approach and transparency are considered strengths, but experts note that coaching an international side is far more demanding than mentoring an IPL franchise.
Sourav Ganguly brings unmatched experience as a player, captain, and BCCI president. Under his captaincy, India began registering historic overseas victories, and his aggressive leadership reshaped Indian cricket. His administrative stint as BCCI chief also strengthened his reputation. However, Ganguly’s direct coaching experience is limited—he has only worked as mentor/director with Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
Recently, Ganguly took up his first full-fledged coaching role as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 League in South Africa. His performance there is expected to offer clues on how well-suited he is for the India job. Ganguly himself has hinted in the past that he is open to becoming India’s coach in the future, but suggested it would only be after Gambhir’s tenure ends in 2027, following the ODI World Cup.
At present, chances of Gambhir being replaced midway are slim. Key reasons include:
Gambhir’s tenure: His contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup, and the BCCI rarely replaces head coaches mid-way unless performances are extremely poor or major controversies arise.
Performance so far: Despite some challenges, Gambhir’s record has been largely satisfactory, highlighted by winning an ICC trophy.
Ganguly’s new role: His current stint with Pretoria Capitals will help him gain hands-on coaching experience before taking on the challenge of leading India.
Public statements: Ganguly himself has praised Gambhir’s work, saying he needs time to learn and is dedicated to the job—remarks that also downplay rumors of an early replacement.
Looking ahead, Sourav Ganguly emerging as India’s coach seems very likely, given his leadership qualities, administrative background, and cricketing acumen. However, any change is unlikely before 2027. Gambhir is expected to continue until his tenure ends, after which Ganguly may begin a new innings as India’s head coach.
