Is a Sequel to the Cult Film Possible?

Aamir Khan and director Rajkumar Hirani are attempting the biggest gamble of their careers. They have decided to make a sequel to the cult classic 3 Idiots. This is undoubtedly a bold move.

Generally, it is better not to disturb cult-status films. Many filmmakers who tried sequels or remakes of such classics ended up failing. While history warns us with harsh examples, Aamir and Hirani deciding to go ahead with a 3 Idiots sequel has surprised many.

Initially, the duo planned to make a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke. However, they shelved the project as the script did not shape up well. With that idea dropped and a storyline finally ready for the long-discussed 3 Idiots sequel, they began discussions in this direction.

The sequel will pick up exactly where the original film ended. The actors from the original version will reprise their roles. However, the big question is how Aamir Khan’s character—who transforms from a student into a top scientist—will be portrayed in the sequel.

Speculation is already running wild in Bollywood. Rumors suggest that Aamir Khan might appear in an Einstein-inspired hairstyle and look.

Leaving these aside, many people on social media feel that making a continuation of a 2009 film is a huge risk. Moreover, both Aamir and Hirani are currently going through a phase of flops, adding to the uncertainty.
