Karnataka High Court has advised actor Kamal Haasan to issue an apology over his controversial remarks claiming that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. However, Kamal's refusal to apologize has sparked intense debate and drawn sharp criticism from the court.
The controversy arises ahead of the release of Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film ‘Thug Life’, which is scheduled to hit theatres on June 5. His statement about the linguistic origins stirred strong reactions in Karnataka, with several groups warning that the film's release could be blocked in the state unless he issued a public apology.
In response, Kamal approached the Karnataka High Court, seeking directions to ensure that ‘Thug Life’ faces no release hurdles in the state. But during the hearing, the court reportedly came down hard on the veteran actor.
“You may be Kamal Haasan, but what gives you the right to hurt public sentiment?” the court asked, adding, “Are you a historian to make such claims?” The bench stated that apologizing would resolve the issue peacefully and questioned why Kamal was unwilling to do so when people only wanted an apology.
Despite the court's remarks, Kamal Haasan stood firm. He defended his comments, stating they were misinterpreted and maintained that he had said nothing wrong. “Why should I apologize when I haven’t made a mistake?” he questioned, further intensifying the controversy.
With tensions rising and the court emphasizing accountability, the issue now seems set to escalate — potentially affecting the film’s smooth release in Karnataka.
