Avatar Craze Fading? Box Office Tells the Story

Avatar: Fire and Ash (Avatar 3) has made excellent use of the Christmas season and continues its global run with strong momentum.

By the end of its second weekend, the film has collected $760 million worldwide. It is expected to enter the $1 billion club quite easily in the coming days.

After the United States ($218 million), the top overseas markets include China ($100 million), France ($54 million) and Germany ($43 million). Despite stiff competition, the film has also performed decently in India with $18.7 million in collections.

At first glance, the numbers look impressive, and crossing the $1 billion mark appears certain. However, that is not the real concern. The bigger question troubling the global box office is whether Avatar 3 can match the standards set by Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2).

Avatar 2 was a massive global blockbuster, earning over $2.3 billion worldwide. Can Avatar 3 reach anywhere close to that figure? According to global box office trends, the answer seems to be unlikely.

Industry observers point to mixed word of mouth in several countries, including India, and suggest that the makers failed to promote Part 3 at the same scale and intensity as Avatar 2.

With the festive season in the US and China set to end in a few days, the film’s performance in these crucial markets will be decisive. Only if Avatar 3 sustains strong collections here can it shine further. Otherwise, questions will arise over the future of the Avatar franchise, and the impact could be felt strongly on Avatar 4 as well.
